Remote Desktop section missing from Remote Tab in Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

In a previous post I demonstrated how to perform an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise using the DISM tool. The actual upgrade process went as planned, however, I noticed that I couldn’t connect to the server via RDP. When connecting via the console in the vSphere Client I noticed that the Remote Desktop section was missing from Remote Tab:

The Fix

To resolve this issue perform the following steps:

1. Run this command:

slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

You should then receive the pop-up box confirming the successful product key install:

20150620005645

2. Then run the command below to activate the product key:

slmgr.vbs /ato

You should then see another pop-up box confirming the successful activation:

20150519151724

3. You will then receive a warning asking you to reboot the server:

20150620010007

Follow the instruction and reboot the server.

4. Once it comes back up the Remote Desktop section of the Remote tab will now be visible:

The Happy Ending

You should then be able to connect to the server via RDP and carry on with your admin duties.
